Chapter Eight
Ash sent Mary up to rest as soon as they reached home. For once she didnât protest, and he was grateful. He put a pot of coffee on to perk and sat at the table waiting for his family to get home.
When they filed in the door, he had worked out what he wanted to say. âI need to speak to all of you. I made coffee.â He signed as he spoke for Estherâs benefit.
âWhatâs going on?â his father asked.
âI need to clarify some things about Mary and me.â
His family took their places around the table and waited for him to speak. No one bothered to get coffee. Ash cleared his throat. âMary and I had a long talk on the way home. Gabe, Seth and Moses, earlier today you suggested I try courting Mary. Thatâs not going to happen.â They were hard words to speak, but they needed to be said.
His mother leaned forward in her chair. âAsh, the two of you seem so right for each other.â
âLet him finish, Mamm,â Pamela said, keeping her eyes lowered. She had to suspect what he was about to say.
Ash needed everyone to understand. âWe know Mary has had a difficult time. I donât want to make things harder for her. The point is, sheâs not comfortable walking out with me. She doesnât feel that way about me. She likes me as a friend. Thereâs never going to be more between us. Sheâs made that clear.â
He would do his best to keep his newfound feelings hidden. From his family and from Mary most of all.
âShe may feel that way now, but things can change,â Gabe said.
Ash gave his brother a sad smile. âI donât think thatâs going to happen. What I need from all of you is to accept that Maryâs feelings for me are not romantic. Donât hint that we belong together or try getting her to change her mind.â
He looked directly at his mother. âOr scheme to put us together. I know you have the best intentions. I love you for it, but please donât. It makes her uncomfortable.â
âWhat about your feelings?â his mother asked.
âMaryâs happiness is important to me. I want her to feel welcome in our home for as long as she wishes to stay. She likes all of us and doesnât want to hurt anyoneâs feelings.â
âWe like her,â Esther said.
âBut we donât want to see you miserable,â Seth said.
âYou deserve happiness, too,â Gabe insisted.
Ash loved his brothers more than ever at that moment. âAm I disappointed that Mary isnât attracted to me? I am. What man wouldnât be. I had an idea of how I expected my life to go. I wanted the same kind of relationship I see Gabe and Seth have with Esther and Pamela. I thought I was ready to start my own family. I didnât want to feel left out. Someday those things will happen for me if Gott wills it. Just not with Mary. For now, Iâm going to concentrate on helping her recover.
